One big pool koinonia party.

A church is the people who stay after the last song. This is what that looks like here — and how you get into it.

What koinonia means here

Koinonia is the old word for shared life. In practice it means the evening rarely ends when the last song does.

06 WAYS IN · NONE OF THEM BINDING

Six ways in, in order of difficulty.

  1. 01

    Just come

Tuesday or Wednesday, 19:00. The single most useful thing you can do is walk in once. Everything else on this list only makes sense afterwards.

  2. 02

    Bring somebody with you

A colleague who has been in Germany four months and knows nobody. A neighbour who is having a hard year. Half of this church arrived because one person said “come with me”.

  3. 03

Sit next to someone in their language

If you speak Deutsch, Nederlands, Español or Français, you are already qualified for the most valuable job here: making sure nobody sits through an evening understanding nothing.

  4. 04

Join one of the seven ministries

Prayer, music, youth, outreach, practical help, women & children, or creative media. No audition, no probation — you say which one, and someone introduces you.

  5. 05

Cook, carry, set up, clear away

Chairs, sound, food, the washing up afterwards. Unspectacular work that the whole evening quietly depends on, and the fastest way to actually know people.

  6. 06

    Support the work

Giving is voluntary, never collected at the door and never announced from the front. If you want to know how it works, ask — we will tell you plainly.

For anyone new to Germany

Sometimes church is a translated letter.

House of Hope is the unglamorous end of this community: understanding a letter from the Amt, finding the right office, someone sitting beside you in a waiting room, a warm meal in a thin week.

There is no form to fill in and no proof to bring. You ask, and somebody helps — whether or not you ever come to a gathering.
